Goddess Freya as the Enchantress Freya, the Enchantress

In the summer of 2008, Marvel Comics issued three one-shot Thor comics out of the normal continuity of the Marvel universe.

  • Thor: Ages of Thunder
  • Thor: Reign of Blood
  • Thor: Man of War
These three interconnected one-shot issues tell stories from original Norse myths, augmented for modern readers.

Freya picking the Golden Apples

In these stories, the Enchantress is conflated with both Freya and Iduna, the goddess who gathers the Golden Apples, which provide eternal life, and great power to those who eat them. Fortunately, the stories can easily be read as centering around Freya -- the most beautiful and desirable of all the goddesses.

All of the deities and monsters from Asgard are present: Odin, Thor, Loki, various Frost Giants, and even the resurrected dead. The stories are a treat, allowing us to see Freya and the other gods and goddesses away from the Marvel Universe with its spandex, spider webs, and mutants. The focus here is on the good old stories -- acquiring the necklace Brisingamen, bartering with Frost Giants, and getting kidnapped by Loki.

Of course, Thor is the ultimate hero of each story... these being comic books about Thor, after all. Still, they are definitely worth reading and the art is excellent. Marvel has outdone itself, and they should be very proud of this offering. Hopefully, they will feature these types of stories again in the future.
